Artists

Yoshimasa Murakami
A member of the “individualist” school of art, Yoshimasa Murakami designed and illustrated books in the 1960s-1980s for many of the major authors of his day, among them Yukio Mishima, Shouzou Numa, and Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, Mikihiko Renjou, and Chimako Tabata. Murakami’s nihilistic realms of fantasy were informed by a unique artistic sense evocative of the literary world, as seen in his illustrations for manuscripts including Yukio Mishima’s “The Sea of Fertility” and Shouzou Numa’s “Yapoo The Human Cattle.” Known for delicate colors and striking lines, Murakami built a reputation among authors and readers alike for his insistence on an artistic style and process not easily reproducible through mass printing. This exhibition presents 400 items with a focus on Murakami’s book designs, also including first edition publications, study sketches, record covers, photos, and more.
