Richard Byers
A site-specific visual installation by Australian new media artist Richard Byers. In most of his art, Byers works with light to create resonance between the world and our perception of it, which he conveys through media including photography, film, and interactive light installations.
In this exhibition, Byers treats the “kura,” or traditional Japanese storehouse, as a work of art in its own right, using time-lapsed images, a scaled replica, photography, and drawings to shape the atmosphere of the space. The timber and clay kura was built in Asakusa in 1868 and survived two major fires that ravaged the area, as well as the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the Tokyo air raids of 1945. The time-lapsed images evoke now-invisible landscapes that have existed over time, conjuring a structure both floating and sinking in an urban valley. The space created represents a day or an eternity of a building that has seen 145 years of life flow around and through it.
