Edward S. Morse is known for his discovery of the Oomori shell mounds. From 1877 he visited to Japan on 3 occasions, with a particular interest in the lives of the common people, and brought back many crafts and artifacts to America as a record of this way of life, reflecting Morse’s admiration for the spirit of the Japanese people. This exhibition presents an array of 320 articles of everyday tools collected by Morse and currently held within the collections of the Peabody Essex Museum and the Boston Museum. The Edo-Tokyo Museum celebrates 20 years since its establishment with a valuable collection of everyday artifacts from the Meiji period, as well as photographs, sketches and diaries kept by Morse himself.
