Scandinavian design from countries such as Denmark and Finland has enjoyed a spot in the limelight in Japan for some time, appealing to its many fans as modern and refined yet not lacking in warmth. Nevertheless, it appears the true state of Finnish graphic design has yet to be fully conveyed.

One of Finland’s foremost graphic designers, Kari Piippo, operates by the design philosophy that good posters are "simple, strong, and sharp," that nothing unnecessary is included and nothing essential left out. Piippo rarely talks about his works in public, yet his exceptionally pared-down expressions — only typography and the minimum necessary number of colors — speak volumes to viewers.

This exhibition focuses on the soul of Piippo's work — posters for theatrical productions and other cultural events — while also presenting a variety of his collected drawings. Each work offers an opportunity to appreciate the essence of design and may also suggest the Finnish landscape of lakes and forest.
