Natsunosuke Mise
Presenting 30 mostly new and recent works by Nihonga painter Natsunosuke Mise, including his university graduation project. Born in Nara in 1973, Mise completed graduate studies at Kyoto City University of Arts in 1999. He then continued producing his own art while teaching at a Nara high school. He currently works as an assistant professor at Tohoku University of Art and Design in Yamagata City.

Mise’s paintings were featured at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo’s “No Border- From Nihonga to Nihonga” exhibition in 2006. From 2007, he spent a year in Florence, Italy as a Gotoh Memorial Foundation researcher. His work has attracted attention in recent years, winning the Voca Award in 2009 and the 5th Nikkei Nihonga Grand Prize Selection Committee’s Special Award in 2012. His ink-based paintings use the materials and techniques of Nihonga and are characterized by their collage-like additions of small pieces of Japanese paper. Sometimes more than 10 meters tall, Mise’s dynamic works feature a variety of images with motifs ranging from imaginary products to realistic depictions of nature to traditionally painted landscapes. His paintings are also inseparably linked to the histories and personal memories of the places where he lives. As seen in his portrayals of Japan as viewed through Nara and his Nihonga paintings of Yamagata, his work shows how the nihonga medium can change according to era, location, and viewer. This exhibition showcases one artist’s attempt to pin down the complex world of Japanese painting through art demonstrating the diversity of Japan and Nihonga.
