Naoki Fujioka
The grass which raises its head through the gaps in the asphalt, or the flowers which bloom reaching towards the sky even as battered by the wind – we can not help but be touched by the persistent life force of plants.
The Italian artist Bruno Munari puts forward a different perspective in our relation to plants stating that “Plants are the true inhabitants of this earth. We can not live without plants, but plants can very well live without us.” Naoki Fujioka’s new work “flora” takes the plants of the fields, forests and rivers as its subject, capturing the light of nature in a technique which reveals the singularity of color and shape of each plant, which continue to bloom with primitive fate despite the obstacles nature throws at them. Fujioka combines a cool, bleak tone with the strength of color of each flower, bearing witness to a beauty which is only arrived at through the surmounting of difficulties and stirs a sense of animism reflecting upon the relationship between humans and plants.
