Shigeo Gocho
Shigeo Gocho (1946-1983) produced three photography compilations, “Days,” “Self and Others,” and “Familiar Street Scenes,” as well as one art book during his short lifetime. His deceptively plain-seeming works continue to captivate generations of viewers for their unique aesthetic sense rooted in Gocho’s unusual eye for the moments in everyday life when it becomes difficult to distinguish between oneself and others.

For the 30th anniversary of Gocho’s death this year, both a new edition of “Familiar Street Scenes” and “Children,” a new compilation of Gocho’s works, will be published. To celebrate the release of these books, MEM presents a two-part exhibition of Gocho’s work. Part 1 showcases around 20 color photos from the 1981 self-published edition of “Familiar Street Scenes.” Yokohama public relations magazines from the 70s and 80s featuring Gocho’s photos will also be on display.
