Ihei Kimura

Seminal Japanese photographer Ihei Kimura gained fame for his casual snapshots of sights catching his interest while wandering the streets of Ginza and Asakusa, Leica in hand. In 1936 he set out for Ryuukyuu (Okinawa), where he had never been before. Then in his mid-thirties, the exotic and dream-like worlds of the photographs he took there became a key part of his oeuvre. He spent the post-war period from 1952 until the last years of his life documenting the rapid development of Akita Prefecture and the transformations of its farming communities and the people. This exhibition presents 20 photos from Kimura’s travels in Ryuukyuu and Akita, works that had profound significance for him as a photographer.
