The Beautiful— Art for Art’s Sake: The Aesthetic Movement 1860–1900

Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Albert Moore, Aubrey Beardsley, Oscar Wilde, Lawrence Alma-Tadema et al.
As the materialism of the mid-19th century post-industrial age ran rampant in London, a progressive art movement transformed people’s lifestyles. Led by avant-gardists, this movement asserted that art should exist for beauty only. This belief produced a revolutionary new form of art and design, one that exalted the beautiful in both art and people’s lives. In addition to changing the interior design of typical family homes, it ushered in the decadence of turn-of-the-century art.

On display are approximately 150 examples of painting, drawing, furniture, craft, and jewelry from the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and other major UK museums. These pieces offer a look into the unique world of Victorian art shaped by DG Rossetti, Albert Moore, Aubrey Beardsley, Oscar Wilde, and other leading artists of the age.
