Taisei Sato
Taisei Sato (b. 1913) was born in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto but lived in Tokyo’s Itabashi Ward for half of a century. Sato, who lost both of his parents soon after he was born, was inspired by the nature of his hometown and first took up art with landscape painting. At age 18 he came to Tokyo to study under Kibo Kodama. After ten years of practice, his painting “Bird Net” was selected for the prestigious Ministry of Education Art Exhibition. Sato went on to focus on natural phenomena such as storms and flame, later creating his famous “Travel Series.” He produced a new style of nature-inspired painting portraying the beauties of the natural world with spirituality. A key figure in post-war Nihonga painting, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in 1992.
This exhibition marks the 100th anniversary of Taisei Sato’s birth. It presents 70 works, drawing from the collections of the Itabashi Art Museum, the Fukuchiyama City Sato Taisei Art Museum, private collections, and museums across Japan, as well as recently restored and never-before exhibited works discovered after Sato’s death.
