The Kiyokawa Taiji Memorial Gallery celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Since opening as an annex to the Setagaya Art Museum in 2003, the gallery has introduced the public to Kiyokawa’s artwork while preserving the atmosphere of his home and studio. This year it presents “The World of Taiji Kiyokawa,” a three-part series of exhibitions that tell the story of the painter’s life and work.
After living in America for three years and traveling to destinations around the world including Europe and India, Kiyokawa returned to Japan in 1954 and began producing passionate abstract works. He then set off for America again in search of a unique world of his own, further honing his art. This second exhibition in the series displays around 15 of Kiyokawa’s paintings from this period. Photographs taken in Tsuguharu Foujita’s Paris studio during a visit on Kiyokawa’s journey back to Japan after his first stay in America are also on display.
