Makoto Morimura
Makoto Morimura presents an exhibition of work in which he deconstructs and re-assimilates the process of analogue communication in letter writing. While participating in the artist in residence program at Social Estate Art Center(New York, USA) in 2012 he sent a letter everyday by airmail to his “self” in Japan, while also photographing daily the airplanes passing over the residency building, in an action reflecting a sense of “not being here but somewhere else” as well as symbolizing one’s connection to the “world”. Much of his work is a response to hyper-acceleration of information and communication through the internet and the sense of discomfort this may also deliver, developing his concept and form based upon personal experiences while broadening this to speak to a wider audience. Here he questions if to take a place in society is to really link with the world, and as the word ”via” suggests, positions himself in an “in-between space” of this narrative.
