The district of Sahel, in the Southern regions of the Sahara desert is an area which receives only 150-500mm of rain per year, making drought a frequent problem, and placing it within the African hunger belt. However still there live a range of livestock farmers, agriculture farmers and fishers. At the same time north of Sahel trading cities for Arabic states are increasingly appearing, bringing with them the influence of Islam and Arabic culture, simultaneously meeting with a struggle to protect local identity and traditions, creating both a place of tension but also place of cultural depth and diversity.
This exhibition of 50 color prints counters perceptions of the region stereotyped by images of Islamic extremism and reflects the hardworking everyday life of local people.
