Takaoka 2013 Craft Competition Awards+

Matsuya Design Gallery
Finished
Takaoka City in Toyama Prefecture continues to pass down its strong tradition of arts and crafts, best represented by “Takaoka copperware” and “Takaoka lacquer.” Both started out as processes of making Kaga region household goods more than 400 years ago. With the aim of becoming a role model for new industrial craft, in 1986 Takaoka established the “Craft Competition in Takaoka,” which solicits contestants from all over Japan under the guiding concept “In Search of New Craft.” The competition serves as a gateway to success for young artisans, with unique categories including the highly creative “Contemporary Craft” and the highly competitive “Factory Craft.” Looking for new value in craft, design, and industry, this exhibition showcases winners of the award, giving an overview of Takaoka’s new ideas for craft.
