Village Kabuki gained popularity in the modern era up until the early Showa period, becoming all the rage in farming communities across the country. Even in Chiba over 30 different villages were host to such performance groups, including the great Ino Kabuki, known as Inonoshibaya, performed as a dedication to the gods at the annual Spring festival at Oosuga Shrine. The troupe did not end with the war and came to their peak in late 50’s early 60’s, but finally broke up in the late 60’s. Despite this in recent years an interest has re-arisen in this art form and the Ino Kabuki Preservation Society has been formed, presenting regular performances since1999. This exhibition depicts in a series of 50 black and white photographs the continual passing down of this tradition and the struggle of older generations to protect their cultural heritage for the future.
