Invented in the 1950s, the melloton is a musical instrument that has been admired by musicians and used in many songs. For the “Boombox-Mellotron Project,” home electrical appliance collector Junichi Matsuzaki of Design Underground and gadget developer Kobayashi Radio have reinterpreted the structure of the mellotron, the tape replay organ, by constructing a “boombox-mellotron” using keyboards to control multiple boomboxes. Artist/engineer Kanta Horio has created a sound installation to introduce the boombox-mellotron to the public for the first time. Special guest artist Takako Minekawa will also give a special live Boombox-Mellotron performance.
