Rina Banerjee “What am I made of and how do you know my name?”
This event has ended.
Especially known for her use of found objects from different cultures such as colorful bird feathers, replica horns of an American Buffalo, Japanese mosquito nets and old medicine chests, Rina Banerjee creates sculptures and installations which skillfully merge the symbolic motifs of colonialism with organic / inorganic materials. Gathering objects from various places she combines them into something larger and transforms the original meaning of each object to create a new visual language. Through her own hybrid cultural settings, Banerjee surveys the collaged world and deconstructs concepts such as West and East, reality and fantasy, nature and artifice, questioning what may be glimpsed between these parameters. In her new works for this exhibition, Banerjee confronts the fundamental question of who we are and the issue of identity in this digital world, which she explores by takin the natural world and human world as opposite mirrors.
