Natsume Soseki and Arts

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
Bringing a focus to the artistic world of the master of modern Japanese literature and national treasure Natsume Soseki (1867-1916), this exhibition presents a rare opportunity to combine Soseki’s words with their visual image, gathering a collection of work which Soseki, with his deep knowledge of Japanese and British art, often made reference to in his novels and art criticism. With the chance to view the works of Shakuchu Ito, Kazan Watanabe, Turner, Millais, Shigeru Ooki, Seiki Kuroda and Taikan Yokoyama through the very eyes of Natsume Soseki, the exhibition also features the art work of Soseki himself, who painted landscapes in the style of the Southern School. While searching out the aesthetic ideals of this literary great, a showcase of book binding and illustration plates from his own publications is also included, reflecting an important stage in book design history with its influence of the Arte Nouveau movement popular at that time.
