“Art and Poetry: Waka-Inspired Masterpieces”

The Nezu Museum
Finished
Waka, 31-syllable poems about subjects such as the change of seasons and the subtleties of the heart, have a close relationship with Japanese art and have been influenced by a variety of artistic genres. This exhibition presents around 30 masterpieces from the museum collection with ties to Waka poetry, including folding screen paintings, makie inkstone boxes, and tea ceremony utensils. Nine of these works are Important Cultural Properties. Also on display are all 100 panels of a picture scroll exhibited for the first time since being restored. Enjoy learning about the connections between Waka poetry and Japanese art from the Heian through the Edo eras.
