Celestial Dance: The Art of Hiten

Suntory Museum of Art
Finished
Buddhist angels that fly and dance in the sky are known as “Hiten,” and from India to Japan, their elegant and magnificent forms have delighted people for centuries. This exhibition examines the forms of Hiten as they have manifested in sculpture, painting, and craft across wide geographical and historical ranges. It features a special display of sculptures depicting “Bodhisattva Riding Clouds” from the Phoenix Hall of the Byodoin Temple ahead of the hall’s unveiling after extensive renovations. Also on display is Byodoin’s sculpture of Hiten attached to the halo of Amidanyorai, the first time for this work to be shown outside of the temple grounds. The Bodhisattva, Amidanyorai, and the Phoenix Hall itself are all designated as National Treasures. This exhibition is an extremely rare opportunity to see these famous pieces up close.
