Musashino Art University and Design III Olivetti and Braun: Indicating Corporate Visions

Musashino Art University Museum & Library
Finished
The products and the corporate identities of the firms Olivetti and Braun continue to influence companies and creators around the world. This third installment of the “Musashino Art University and Design” series examines the heart of Olivetti and Braun’s designs.

Founded in 1908 in the small northern Italian city of Ivrea, Olivetti started out making typewriters and branched into calculators, office equipment, and other workplace items. Its products had an immeasurable impact on 20th century office spaces. The company owes its evolution to the outstanding direction of its founder, which was rooted in a distinct corporate philosophy.

Braun was established in Frankfurt in 1921. It got its start in audio equipment before moving on to shavers, watches, lighters, and other everyday essentials. Braun’s products were simple but functional, and their design and close relationship with communications systems helped the firm build a brand image to an extent never seen before.

This exhibition showcases the products Olivetti and Braun gave the world, as well as posters, catalogues, graphic designs, and other promotional goods related to the firms. It presents a total of around 200 items from the museum’s collection and offers the opportunity to re-examine the relationship between design and corporate philosophy.
