Modern Nihonga Through its Themes

Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Kaii Higashiyama, Hogai Kano, Kansai Mori, Insyo Domoto, Kokei Kobayashi, Gyokusen Mochizuki
The themes of nihonga are largely divided into “Birds and Flowers” (Still life), “Mountains and Water”(Landscape) and portraiture, but when these are examined more closely they reveal a rich context depicting historical practices, myths and charms, along with images of beauty and belief, which when combined with Japans four seasons creates an effect of even greater opulence. At the same time, with the divisions between the Tokyo and Kyoto art circles, each painting also comes to reveal cultural differences between one region and another. If we examine modern nihonga then we may also identify a similarly rich reflection of the age, and this exhibition provides a unique insight into this world through a multiple array of perspectives.
