Taro Okamoto
What is given form to through the work of Taro Okamoto? His drawing studies, sketches and maquettes may provide some hint towards such a question. When Okamoto creates his work he at first has an image, he then sketches this with pencil or charcoal on paper, then through various drawings and maquettes he comes to realize the work itself in a rather orthodox pattern. In an essay written for Bijutsutecho in 1957 entitled “From the Impact of the Idea to its Realization – My Creative Process” Okamoto commented that it was not the will to “draw” something but rather the will to express something which is at the root of his creative drive. In this process the image is abstracted, deformed and invested with a certain universalism through its numerous expressions and layers of time, creating a field of understanding towards the viewer. And as a result the viewer is able to grasp through the work a sense of their own latent consciousness. This exhibition aims to provide, through the various sketches of Okamoto, the potential images hidden in his works.
