Artists

Francis Bacon
One of the greatest painters since Picasso, Francis Bacon (1909-1992) was born in Dublin and worked mainly in London. He has described his work as “an assault on the nervous system.” Neither simple illustration nor decorative art, his paintings fit somewhere between concrete and abstract and could only have been made in the 20th Century. Both delicate and bold brush strokes overlap with signature distorted figures in a way that grabs and shakes the viewer.

Major museums in New York and London have held Bacon solo shows in recent years, but until 2013 Japan had not hosted such an event since a large exhibition during the artist’s lifetime. The Toyota Municipal Museum now presents 33 oil paintings from the 1940s until just before Bacon’s death, mostly representative works including four large and two small triptychs. Visitors can also see footage of dance performances by the choreographers Tatsumi Hijikata and William Forsythe, both of whom were influenced by Bacon.
