A large-scale installation made by architect and Hagiso director Mitsuyoshi Miyazaki and artist Takuma Ikeda. Their collaboration features a six-meter pillar resembling a tree-trunk, from the top of which 1,200 pieces of yarn extend outward radially. Two projectors attached to the top of the structure screen collages of nighttime cityscapes from Ikeda’s “Over There” series onto the floor. The giant “tree” seems to nourish the life force of the miniaturized city, forming a kind of closed circulatory system of cascading light and “foliage.” Inside Hagiso, a small, renovated wooden apartment in the Yanaka area, the tree appears much too large for the scale of the projected city, inverting the relationship between architecture and the urban environment. The giant red tree seems to suspend the city of Tokyo in mid-air.
