Naoya Hatakeyama
Taka Ishii Gallery presents a new rendering of Naoya Hatanaka’s renowned “Blast” series, an ongoing project which has continued to develop since 1995 and has been exhibited widely throughout Japan and internationally. This series of photographs of blasting boulders, coordinated with the support of explosive experts, marked a changing point in Hatanaka’s grasp upon photography, his practice of which had until then focused upon careful, poetic observations upon nature, the built environment and the philosophies which give them form. This process of reassessment was given further urgency by Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, forcing Hatakeyama to reevaluate his practice and leading him to earnestly reflect upon the “Blast” series. This exhibition presents another take upon this series with a fresh eye.
