Seiho Takeuchi - Master of Modern Nihonga

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Seiho Takeuchi et al.
A flag barer for the modernization of the Kyoto art scene, Seiho Takeuchi(1864-1942) left a singular mark upon modern nihonga and came to be an inspiration to generations of nihonga painters after him. He studied the Maruyama-Shijo school of nihonga under Kono Bairei but came into conflict with this traditional teaching and its strict rules. In 1900 he traveled to Europe for the Paris Expo where he was given much exposure to modern Western art which seemed to suggest the expanded possibilities for the genre of nihonga. Referring to these techniques he combined them with the traditional practice of nihonga in a manner which may be to have brought rediscovery of the very principles of nihonga.
This exhibition brings together 110 of Takeuchi’s most renowned works, along with other supporting materials which cast light upon the new foundations of nihoga, while raising up examples of many artists who have followed in his footsteps.
