Natsuko Sakamoto + Youichi Umetsu ”How to Make a Right Painting”

Artists

Natsuko Sakamoto, Youichi Umetsu
The two artists Natsuko Sakamoto and Youichi Umetsu, of very different style and approach, come together to create a single installation of combined paintings and drawings. In the repetition of a series of studies which connect like verses of a poem, drawings come to give substance to their subject and transform towards tableaux. This process of creation encompasses the architectural, the improvised, the planned and the arbitrary, traversing across the poles of the whole, to form a singular expression, which simultaneously embodies the collaboration of two artists with their own individual practices and in throwing a question towards the “individual” of modern painting, they push a response to further complexity which does not shy from challenging the audience.
