The Temples of the Ooku

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum
Finished
The women of Ooku (the female quarters of the inner palace of Edo Castle) were devoted to and patronized a variety of temples many of which were associated with the house of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The closeness of this relationship is highlighted by cases in which treasured Buddhist statues were sent from these temples to the Edo castle so that the women of Ooku might look upon them, while financially the Ooku supported the temples, with examples of temples destroyed by fire directly approaching the Ooku for funds to rebuild. At the same time scandals of affairs with priests upon visitation to these temples also shine another light upon this close connection. This exhibition maps the intimate relationship between the women of Ooku and their associated temples through a rare collection of artifacts largely kept from public view until now.
