Ando Gallery is pleased to announce “Intervene,” a solo exhibition of new works by Seiya Shinotsuka.
Shinotsuka was born in Kumamoto in 1970, graduated from Tama Art University, Department of Japanese Painting. He participated in the group exhibition “MOT Annual 2006: No Border” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, in 2006, also joined “Picnic or Recurrent Migration” at the Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, in 2008.
For one year from June 2012, Shinotsuka had stayed and worked on his artworks in Berlin, Germany. This exhibition is his first solo show since he came back from Berlin. Under the theme “the circulation of the atmosphere; the cycle of wetting and drying,” the artist had depicted the images of volcanic landscape of his home province Aso, and the scenery of wet atmosphere. During the time spent in Germany where its climate is quite different from Japan, the artist viewed his home country’s climate from another side, and deepened the understanding towards it. He also became aware of the fact that the grassland of Aso has been maintained by longstanding human intervention, such as grazing, mowing and broadcast burning which have been repeated for over a millennium. The exhibition title “Intervene” has the general meaning of “two things or time existing or separating.” The new works of Shinotsuka represented image of his hometown and its human intervention as its original sources.
In this exhibition 19 new paintings depicted by oil stick on 40 x 50 cm canvases are presented. Oil stick is the first material selected by the artist. He uses this material by spreading the lines and shapes remained on the canvas with his fingertips, as he does with his former material, oil pastel. The colors are given more depth, and seem to touch deep inside our mind. In the autumn of 2014, a solo exhibition is scheduled at the Tsunagi Art Museum in Kumamoto. There are great expectations for Shinotsuka’s further steps and in his continuing career.
