“60th Traditional Japanese Arts and Craft Exhibition”

Crafts Gallery at the National Museum of Modern Art
Finished
Due to the efforts of our predecessors Japanese craft has come to form a highly unique identity, which we may say raises it above mere craft to a highly refined art form and has received high praise around the world. Upon the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Traditional Japanese Arts and Craft Exhibition here is taken the opportunity to reflect upon the present condition of traditional arts and crafts and to consider its future. In the efforts to preserve these historic traditions we should not only concern ourselves with the conservation of traditional techniques but also the raising of aesthetic awareness and the formation of new traditions. Here this exhibition attempts to contribute towards such a task by introducing 97 contemporary craft makers who reflect a new approach to tradition.
