Yuichi Yokoyama
In the midst of studying oil painting Yuichi Yokoyama (b. 1967, Miyazaki) landed upon manga as a means of “drawing time”, coming to develop a touch filled with speed and characters filled with personality. His numerous works including “New Engineering”, “Travel”, “NIWA” and “Baby Boom” have not only been widely acclaimed in Japan but also across France, USA, Italy, Spain and Russia. As a result he has come to join numerous international exhibitions and held the ambitious solo exhibition “’I am drawing the Time.’ by Yuichi Yokoyama, Archive of Neo-Manga” at Kawasaki City Museum in 2010. Yokoyama’s approach to manga, which seemingly captures the scenes before one’s eyes, may seem removed from the standard narrative driven manga many are familiar with, however his work has a power to impose a pull that we can not resist. Filled with earnestness, each coma is absorbed in a flow of time, while he raises up a form of manga which reaches beyond manga, “neo manga”, incorporating sound, words, movement and character into his unique expression. This exhibition presents original drawings from his latest work “World Map Room”, released on 1st June, along with new collage works, as well as various character brain storming sketches.
