Tomoko Yoneda
In this solo exhibition of one Japan’s leading photographers, Tomoko Yoneda presents a body of work which builds on the foundations of documentary yet simultaneously succeeds in catching the invisible memory and history of its subjects. With works such as “Sakhalin Island”, moving image and a selection of her major productions from recent years, she shapes an image of the past which survives amongst the scenes of contemporary Japan, as well as elsewhere across the world.
What events once occurred in the landscapes and structures of today? As the viewer comes to realize this history they also come to view the image in a new way, as if caught in an optical illusion. And while Yoneda exploits to the full the very essence of photography she also brings into question the very essence of what the viewer sees.
