Léonard Foujita
The Pola Museum of Art presents three new acquisitions of work by Léonard Foujita(Tsuguharu Fujita, 1886-1968), including an example of his early period, as well as benchmarks in Fouhjita’s post war career.

Active with the École de Paris in the 1920s and creating a sensation on the Paris art scene at the time he was producing his ‘milky white’ nudes, Foujita spent the years of World War II in Japan, and after the war again resumed painting in Paris, coming to focus upon the motifs of children.

“Cubistic Still Life” was produced in Paris before he established his signature penchant for ‘milky white skin,’ and shows influences of contemporary Paris avant-garde style, while “Sirens” and “Les Grotesques” reveal Foujita’s interest in Western fable and myth, also reflecting the influence of his devotion to the Christian faith following the war.

These three works provide a unique insight into a new aspects of Foujita’s art which have remained little known even up to now.
