“Le Corbusier and 20th Century Art”

National Museum Of Western Art, Tokyo

Artists

Le Corbusier
Le Corbusier (1887–1965), designer of the National Museum of Western Art’s Main Building, was not only a major 20th century architect, he was also a multitalented artist active in a huge range of media ranging from painting to sculpture, prints, tapestry and film. He spent every morning in his studio painting and every afternoon in his architectural office, a rare creative talent capable of switching effortlessly between different fields.

This exhibition demonstrates how Le Corbusier’s art and architectural spaces fit together and resonate with each other by displaying his paintings and sculptures in a building he designed. Organized with the cooperation of the Fondation Le Corbusier in Paris and the Taisei Corporation, holders of one of the world’s major collections of Le Corbusier art, the show highlights a focus recent in years on Le Corbusier’s pursuit of a “synthesis of the arts” during the latter half of his life.

Visitors are offered a glimpse of Le Corbusier’s unique artistic vision developed in his search for the roots of creativity through a wide expanse of artistic production that went beyond the framework of Modernism. In addition to the art of Le Corbusier, also on display are works by contemporaries and close connections in the age of L’Esprit Nouveau such as Ozenfant, Léger, and Lipchitz, Cubists Le Corbusier greatly admired such as Picasso, Braque, Gris, and Leger, and other notable influences including Bauchant, DuBuffet and Soutter.
