Shohei Matsuda

The Kanto region’s first major retrospective for the beloved Western-style painter Shohei Matsuda (1913-2004). Matsuda went to study in Paris in 1938 but returned the following year due to the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1947, he visited Iwai Island, across the sea from Ube Yamaguchi where he grew up, and began working on the Suonada series, which would make his name known to the world and become his lifelong theme. He also painted profound oil paintings with familiar motifs such as roses, dogs, and fish. Marking the centennial of his birth, this exhibition presents 120 works from when Matsuda studied in Paris to his later years in order to look back on the achievements of this unrivaled, distinctive artist.
