An atelier village formed in Ikebukuro between 1930-1940, with more than 100 ateliers built in rental housing units. Artists and aspiring artists from across the country gathered, lived, and worked in this lively environment. However, Japan’s military culture also rose during this time period, and Toshima Ward, where the village was located, sustained heavy damage from an air raid in April 1945. This exhibition showcases works by artists representative of the village, including Hideo Oguma, Ryosaku Takayama, and Goro Tsuruta. It examines the memory of “Ikebukuro Montparnasse” with a focus on societal changes and the various forms of artistic expression born from them.
