The Seki Art Gallery Collection: The World of Modern Japanese Masters

New Otani Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Matazo Kayama et al.
Matazo Kayama drew attention in the early post-WWII period for his animal paintings strongly influenced by Western art. His subsequent works, inspired by both Eastern and Western classics, breathed new life into post-war Japanese painting. Kayama pioneered the practice of imbuing modern Japanese paintings, whether Eastern or Western in style, with Western aspects while simultaneously evoking Japanese aesthetics. Focusing on Kayama’s works, this exhibition introduces around 40 modern Japanese and Western paintings.
