Emile Claus and Belgian Impressionism

Tokyo Station Gallery
Finished

Artists

Emile Claus, Georges Seurat, Torajiro Kojima, Kijiro Ota et al.
From the second half of the 19th century to the early 20th century there grew a movement in Belgium known as “Luminism.” Centering around the work of Emile Claus and deriving much influence from French impressionism, it created a world inspired by nature that seemed to gleam with sunlight. With the introduction of Georges Seurat the movement of new impressionism gained even greater force and put greater emphasis upon the role of light in painting. Amongst this rising tide the Japanese painters Torajiro Kojima and Kijiro Ota took up studies in France and through the Belgium influence came to introduce impressionism to Japan. This exhibition attempts to illuminate the various developments of impressionism in France, Belgium, and Japan, following the work of Emile Claus and his contemporaries.
