Aung Ko
In his concluding exhibition of the AIR3331 Artist-in-Residence “Alternative Tokyo vol.3”, the Burmese artist, Aung Ko presents a collection 9 acrylic portraits of people he met in the Kanda area during his stay. For Aung Ko, drawing portraits is a way to connect with people and understand each other when there is no common language to communicate, studying each model and learning about each other through the short drawing sessions he held with them. Based on the impression he received from each session, Aung Ko went on to select motifs from Ukiyoe series of woodcut prints ”Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” (1826 - 1833, Hokusai Katsushika) to combine with their image. This exhibition also features the original pencil drawings along with the comments from the models on their experience of being portrayed.
