The Beauty of Imari Sometsuke Porcelain

Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum Tokyo
Finished
In the Edo period, much Sometsuke (white porcelain dyed with cobalt) was produced at Hizen and Arita, and then distributed via the port of Imari in Saga Prefecture to the whole of Japan. Measuring as large as 60 cm in diameter, the plates were decorated with people, animals, fish, and other lucky motifs. Their novel designs and compositions demonstrated the abundant painting talent of the era’s craftsmen. This exhibition presents around 150 Imari Sometsuke dishes, giving viewers a look at the splendor of Edo period handiwork.

Exhibited pieces to be changed on 10/21 and 11/11.
