Masakatsu Takagi
Masakatsu Takagi (b.1979) is a video artist and musician based in Kyoto. His activities include museum exhibitions, CD and DVD releases, international concert tours, and music for a number TV of commercials and programs. Last year he composed and recorded the main theme and soundtrack for the film “Wolf Children (The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki),” which premiered worldwide. Takagi was selected as one of the “100 most respected Japanese people in the world” in the 2009 edition of Newsweek Japan.
Takagi’s 2008 exhibition “Itako” at Yamamoto Gendai attracted much attention for its projection of dark imagery reminiscent of the boundary between life and death, contrasting starkly to his previous videos full of kaleidoscopic colors. The exhibition featured “Lava,” a video of woman slowly dissolving into dark black water, and “Tidal,” a sequence of images showing the hair and face of a girl. In 2010, Takagi produced “Ymene” in attempt to create an exhibition that simultaneously shook human cells and minds through fast-moving colors depicting a dream-like world that appealing directly to the senses.
At “Hatsugasai,” Takagi presents a new work made as a sequel to “Utagaki” from “Going through Africa - Two Artists Linking Japan and Africa” shown at Yokohama Creative City Center in May 2013. To produce “Utagaki,” Takagi visited Ethiopia, where he was welcomed with claps and cheerful singing by the local people. Takagi took footage of people gathered in a circle listening to songs transcending the boundaries of language and culture and added lights and colors to illumination these scenes of people engaged in this instinctive human behavior. About Hatsugasai, Takagi says, “visitors are welcome to walk around, dance, chat, and have fun at the exhibition,” hoping everyone will enjoy the “festival” together, rather than confronting his work seriously in order to appreciate it as a piece of art. Also on display is “Anyura,” a video filled with the imagery of children’s drawings created for “Cosmic Travelers— Toward the Unknown” exhibition at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo in 2011.
