Leo Lionni
Leo Lionni is perhaps best known for his picture book “Swimmy,” which often appears in elementary school textbooks. He was born in Holland and worked in Italy as a graphic designer before fleeing to the United States at the outbreak of World War II in 1939 to start his career as a picture book creator. He made his debut with “Little Blue and Little Yellow,” the story of a friendship between blue and yellow pieces of paper. He went on to produce many heart-warming children’s books, always casting a warm eye on small characters striving to be themselves. Examples include the mouse “Frederick” and the inchworm “Inch by Inch.” Sometimes referred to as a “magician of color,” Lionni creates beautiful worlds through a variety of techniques including watercolor, oil painting, and collage. His illustrations effortlessly draw readers into his journeys of the imagination. This exhibition introduces 100 or so original pictures for his children’s books and around 30 of his oil paintings, sculptures, and other works.
