“Masterpieces from the Yamadera Goto Museum of Art”

Bunkamura Museum of Art

Artists

Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot et al.
Europe has an extremely wide range of paintings. Each era had many different styles and genres, and one after another, new trends came forth as the times changed. The Yamadera Goto Museum of Art in Yamagata City houses diverse styles of European paintings ranging from 16th century Baroque works to 19th century Barbizon School landscapes.

Around 70 paintings from the Yamadera Goto Museum collection guide the viewer through the modal transitions that occurred in European paintings from the 16th through 19th centuries, while at the same time providing insight into various themes from ancient myths, the Bible, and literature. By questioning the meaning behind Barbizon School artists’ choice of the “landscape” as their primary motif, the audience will gain an understanding of the period behind the movement that ushered in the modern era.
