“Selected Masterpieces from Celadon Wares - A Variation of Green -“

Toguri Museum of Art
Finished
The technique of making Celadon glazed wares was established in China during the late Han period (AD25-220). Although for a long time Celadon glazed wares were produced only in China, during the 10th century the glazing technique was introduced to Korean Peninsula and Korai style celadon glazed wares were born and developed into a design with carved line and inlay. In addition, during the 15th and the 16th century in Korea, the celadon glazing technique was evolved to create white ceramics called Funseisaki (Buncheong ware). The ceramic production technique was brought to Japan through Korean Peninsula. In the beginning of 17th century Imari-yaki production began in Japan and the Japanese original style that combines dying the ware with Celadon glaze was invented. Developed from the Imari-yaki technique, Nabeshima style wares were created as a gift for the Shogun family and highlighted the beauty of Japanese Celadon glazed ceramics.
This exhibition features Imari-yaki and Nabeshima-yaki style Celadon glazed wares as well as those from the Korean Peninsula, with particular attention paid to the richness of color and form.
