“A Retrospective on Shimooka Renjo - 100 Years After His Death”

Tokyo Photographic Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Renjo Shimooka
In the first large-scale retrospective of Shimooka Renjo(1823-1914) this exhibition not only pays respect to his position as a pioneer of photography in Japan but also highlights the fact that he was first and foremost a painter and presents his paintings and photography together for the first time. Together with related exhibits and historical texts, this more comprehensive collection of works provides a more accurate view of his life and accomplishments and allow us to better understand his place in the history of photography in Japan.
