Japan has a long tradition of expressing love and admiration for flowers and birds in art. In the spring of 2015, the Yamatane Museum of Art presents an exhibition devoted to this classic theme, focusing primarily on the kaleidoscopic variety of flowers and birds in Nihonga since the Meiji Era (1868-1912). Today’s artists continue to create paintings of birds and flowers in a rich variety of styles, from meticulously realistic works drawn from life to works in highly decorative styles, shown with ingenious compositions and palettes.

This exhibition presents works from the museum’s collection that range from Shunso Hishida’s “White Peony” and Gyoshu Hayami’s “Emerald Mosses and Verdant Turf” featuring experimental uses of new techniques to depict flowers, to Seiho Takeuchi’s “Horned Owl” and Shoko Uemura’s “White Peacock” with realistic portrayals of birds based on close observation. The museum hopes visitors enjoy these works by artists whose gazes are concentrated on seasonal changes and those who have thought deeply about the significance of flowers and birds in people’s lives, bringing new forms of expression to the rich array of depictions of flowers and birds cultivated in the Japanese tradition.
