Artists

Sumio Kawakami
Sumio Kawakami(1895−1972)was primarily a woodblock print maker whose works took the westernization of Japanese society in the Meiji through Showa periods as their subject, often portraying utterly new cultural developments such as western fashions. His hometown of Yokohama served as an entry point for this influx of new culture, and his works reflect both his studies of Holland and Japan’s opening up to the rest of the world he witnessed as a youth. In addition to prints and illustrations, Kawakami also created glass pictures and oil paintings. The Society for National Painting Awarded him the Fourth Class of Order of the Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1967. This exhibition displays works tracing the stylistic development of this artist whose prints featuring simple materials and unique coloring blend a special exoticism with a nostalgia for the Japan of the past.
