Born in Kagwa prefecture in 1918, Yuko Nakagawa caused scandal amongst the ikebana world with his rejection of established schools of flower arrangement, pursuing his own independent practice and even refusing to take on disciples, commanding his full attention to the very essence of floral life forms. Pushing this dialogue to the extremes in a form of struggle he came to give birth to a myriad of works which push beyond the imagination. One of his most iconic works is “Flower Monk”, an upturned glass vase filled with the petals of 900 carnations surrounded by red sap, with other major pieces including “Blues” resembling a giant Chinese cabbage, each piece tearing through the established rules of Ikebana to shock us with a radically new expression. In 2002 he undertook a collaboration with the then 95 year old butoh dancer, Kazuo Ohno in an open air performance involving the dropping 1 million tulip petals from the sky. This film tells the legend of this anarchist of flower tradition, putting him on par with such pioneers as Sen no Rikyu.
