What role should design play in today’s excessive consumer society? We can think about this question by looking at the idea of “up-cycling.” We can also pay attention to the possibility of designing the system of society and not just the shapes of things. Some people attempt to uncover the future by tracing the footsteps of human civilization. It’s worth noting that the sensibility of designers has also been changing. This exhibition will introduce two design teams: Formafantasma and Studio Drift. Both aim to find potential in things that have never been regarded as viable materials. For instance, they transmute lava into glass, flour into tableware, shellac into vases, and waste into mirrors, as if they were modern-day alchemists. This exhibition gives viewers an understanding of new design trends by emerging modern alchemists who show us new ways of recognizing material. Come be amazed by their achievements!
